The Ukraine national team was first recognized by FIFA and UEFA in 1992 after the Soviet Union crumbled. The Yellow and Blue were starting from scratch with Russia taking the honors of past Soviet glory as well as taking some of the best Ukrainian players of the era who chose to play with Russia. Andriy Shevchenko is arguably the most important person in the side’s history, being the all-time leading goal scorer, 2nd all-time leading cap winner and having served as both the team’s manager and assistant manager.
